Porto Palermo Castle
The castle is built on a peninsula in the small bay of Porto Palermo, which in antiquity was known as the Bay of Panormes. It is located on the road connecting Himara with Qeparo.
The castle was constructed by Ali Pasha Tepelena over the ruins of an earlier Venetian fortress.
The castle has a triangular plan with three strong bastions at the corners. Its dimensions are 150 m x 400 m, and the walls reach a height of 20 m. The entrance is located in the middle of the southern wall.
Ali Pasha primarily used the castle as a military post and a prison. The facilities housed the garrison, with one area specifically designated as a prison.
A significant part of the castle consists of a large number of vaulted rooms, which lead up to a shared terrace on the upper part.
