Lekuresi Castle
Lëkurësi Castle is located southeast of the city of Saranda, in a uniquely strategic position from which the entire city, the Corfu Channel, and the Ksamil Islands can be monitored.
This castle was built around 1537 on earlier ruins of the old village of Lëkurës. Its construction coincides with the time when Sultan Suleiman attacked Corfu, and it became necessary to control the Saranda Harbor along with the road connecting the city to Butrint.
The castle has a square shape, with two round towers placed at its northwest and southeast corners. The first floor served as a storage area or warehouse.
Given its strategic location, the main purpose of building the castle was to monitor the sea.
The walls reach a height of 6.7-7 meters, with a thickness of up to 2 meters. The castle was declared a monument of historical and cultural significance in May 1970.
