Castle Details

Petrelë Castle was built during the 5th–6th centuries AD, during the Late Antiquity period, under the reign of Emperor Justinian I (527–565 AD). During the Byzantine period, fortifications and wall additions were made to increase its security. In the 13th–14th centuries, the castle became the residence of the Topia family, an important Albanian feudal family and princes of Arbëria. During the wars between Skanderbeg and the Ottomans, Petrelë was a significant center, as Mamica, Skanderbeg’s sister who was married into the Topia family, had settled in this castle. During that time, the entrance of the castle was also reconstructed and joined with the existing structure. Petrelë became an urban center starting from the 13th century and continues to be inhabited to this day. Just a few minutes from this castle lies the ancient settlement of Persqopi, an Illyrian city built in the 4th century BC.
