Castle Details

We are dealing with the main prehistoric fortification in Central Albania. It is the most important monument of Illyrian architecture from the early period. Built on a conical hill, its rocks delimit a slope descending from the summit to the west. The castle or settlement rebuilt on it dates to Late Antiquity – Early Middle Ages. In the list of castles rebuilt by Justinian in the province of New Epirus, Procopius also mentions a castle called Tyrkanos, identifiable with the ruins of Tujan Castle. Opposite Tujan Castle are the Church of St. Mary of Brari and the monumental tomb of the Skuraj family, dating from the 10th–12th centuries AD. Another important historical element of the area is the Brari Bridge, at the entrance of the village of Tujan, which is part of the Arber Road. Since ancient times, this has been one of the country’s main roads alongside the Via Egnatia. For example, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg traveled this strategic route from Krujë to Petralbë (Petrelë).
