Castle Details

The Castle of Lëkurësit is located southeast of the city of Saranda, in a special strategic position from where the entire city, the Corfu channel, and the Ksamil islands can be controlled. This castle was built around 1537 on the ruins of the older village of Lëkurës. Its construction coincides with the time when Sultan Suleiman attacked Corfu, creating the necessity to control the Saranda harbor, along with the road connecting the city to Butrint. The Castle of Lëkurësit has a square shape, with two round towers located to its northwest and southeast. The first floor served as a warehouse and storage. The castle's location clearly shows that its main purpose was sea surveillance. The height of the walls reaches 6.7 to 7 meters, and their thickness up to 2 meters. It was declared a monument of historical and cultural value in May 1970.
