Castle Details

Lezha Castle is one of the most important objects of Albanian Cultural Heritage and History. The castle of the ancient city of Lezha is surrounded by walls from different periods dating back to antiquity, the 4th century BC, when it was known as the ancient city of Lissus. It has been burned and repaired several times, while its last documented reconstructions date from 1521, during the time of Sultan Suleiman. The castle holds a strategic position with a wonderful view, rising atop a hill overlooking the surrounding fields and the Adriatic Sea on the horizon. In Lezha Castle, our National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti made an alliance with 12 Albanian princes, an event that was decisive for the history of Albania and the Balkans, stopping for a considerable period the Ottoman advance in the Balkans, turning into an insurmountable wall for them in Western Europe.
