Castle Details
Tepelena Castle is located north of the city of Tepelena. It is a historic fortress built in the 14th century and stands at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. Historically, this castle has been very important due to its strategic position, controlling the routes from Gjirokastra along the Drinos valley and another from Përmeti through the Vjosa valley. This castle was reconstructed by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the 18th century, one of the most famous figures in Albanian history. The fortress played an important role in the wars for Albania’s independence and was the site of some of the most significant battles during Ali Pasha’s time. Currently, inside Ali Pasha Tepelena’s castle, houses have been built where approximately 300 residents live. Tepelena Castle offers an excellent view of the city of Tepelena and the rural areas around it. Inside, visitors can explore various rooms, halls, corridors, and its large towers. Tepelena Castle is an ideal place to learn more about the history and culture of this area and to discover the beautiful places surrounding it.
